I know that most of you do not want to know the sad and horrifying truth of where animal food comes from. I have spent the last few years deeply immersed in finding the truth of animal agriculture. It literally shattered my heart and soul and changed our lives completely. I have kept fairly quiet so as not to upset anyone and the few things I have outwardly shared have been largely avoided. I understand. It is so difficult to look at. Trust me, we were there. But there are billions of animals suffering horribly because of our unwillingness to look and change. We need to become aware if change is going to happen. The truth is intentionally being hidden from you. We all know that an animal has to die for humans to eat their flesh. The truth of the animal agriculture industry and especially factory farming is so incredibly devastating and heart breaking that if everyone knew the truth, one of the largest industries in the world would collapse. We can and will no longer be quiet. It is our responsibility to create awareness and we are obligated to do something. This is the reason we have made the change to a farm sanctuary.
This is the beginning…
This is a picture from a dairy operation, proudly displaying thousands of calves. Every one of these tiny huts contains a baby. A calf taken from her mother the day she was born. Perhaps you didn’t know. Haven’t made the connection. We didn’t either.
A cow is a mammal. Just like humans, her body makes milk for her baby. A cow must become pregnant and give birth to a calf to produce milk. The milk is for the baby calf. However, in modern dairy practices, the milk is not given to the calf. In fact, the calves are taken from their mother the day they are born so the milk can be taken for human consumption. Female dairy cows are repeatedly bred (by artificial insemination – a very invasive procedure) and give birth so that their child can be taken away and humans can take their milk. The mother cows, just like human mothers love their babies and are repeatedly devastated by the loss of their children. The baby cows are moved into calf huts and fed milk replacer with no mother to care for them, love them and feed them. After the hut, the babies are destined to one of three fates. The females are raised to be the next generation of milk producers. The males (who are of no value to the dairy industry) are sent off to be raised and slaughtered for beef or tortured and killed for veal. Veal calves are confined in tiny crates, unable to move and fed a diet low in iron to keep them anemic and their meat white and tender until they are slaughtered at only 18 – 20 weeks of age.
The pictures you see of cows grazing on idyllic green pastures are far from the painful truth of factory farms. Even organic farms and family dairy farms use these same practices. More on standard farm practices later. But, the sad truth of dairy is that there is immense suffering involved for the animals. Simply, cow’s milk is for baby cows, not humans. Human bodies have no need for cow’s milk like you’ve been told.
